The fire which broke out at a former military barracks outside Knin on Tuesday is still active and occasional explosions can be heard, officials at the Knin County Protection and Rescue Service said on Wednesday morning.

Firefighters from Knin and rescue teams from Sibenik, Split and Zadar were on duty on the ground throughout the night, said the head of the service, Milovan Kevic.

Some 130 residents of Padjani, where the fire broke out, were evacuated and spent the night in a military barracks in Knin.

The evacuation began after the fire broke out and spread over a larger area, including the army depots with leftover ammunition. Road and rail traffic in the area was disrupted.

The Defence Ministry said in a statement in the evening that Defence Minister Davor Bozinovic had set up a commission to investigate the circumstances surrounding the explosions. No one was injured, according to the police.
