Representatives of 45 farmers' associations from eight counties on Monday held talks with wheat buyers and representatives of Agriculture Ministry to discuss wheat purchase price.

Farmers' main demand is that the minimum purchase price of wheat should be 1.60 kuna per kilogram and that harvest subsidies should be paid no later than September 15.

As the participants in the 3-hour meeting were unable to reach agreement, farmers announced they would organise a major protest and block 20 roads in eight counties at 1100 hours Tuesday.

The chairman of the coordinating body of farmers' associations from Slavonia and Baranja, Dragutin Dukic, said farmers would not give up their demands, adding that they had not other choice but to block the roads.

Mato Mlinaric of the Independent Farmer of Croatia said that the offered price of 1.35 kuna per kilogramme was unacceptable and supported the announced protest.
