The State Election Commission (DIP) has so far processed results from 99.99 percent of a total of 6,750 polling stations at which voters cast their ballots to decide if Croatia should join the European Union, and it is awaiting results from only one polling station, a ship.
The results show that 66.27 percent of voters who took part in the referendum voted in favour of Croatia's EU accession, while 33.13 percent voted against.
Of 4,504,765 registered voters, 1,960,208 or 43.51 percent went to the polls.
The turnout was the highest in Varazdin County, 53.66%, followed by Zagreb County (52.81%) and Medjimurje County (51.80%), while Lika-Senj County saw the lowest voter turnout, 34.52%, followed by Sibenik-Knin County (37.06%) and Zadar County (38.57%).
In the 52 countries where the referendum was organised the turnout was very low, and of the 412,628 Croatian citizens entitled to vote outside the country, only 14,494 or 3.51% exercised their right.
After polling stations were closed at 7 pm on Sunday, a 48-hour deadline started running for the submission of objections to possible irregularities during the voting procedure. The referendum results will become final after the expiry of other deadlines as well, including one for the submission of complaints to the Constitutional Court.
The DIP has so far received only one objection, from the Croatian Pure Party of Rights (HCSP), DIP deputy chair Vesna Cufar Saric told the media.
Within 48 hours from receipt of an objection, DIP must make a decision on it, after which the party that has submitted the objection has 48 hours for a possible complaint to the Constitutional Court, which, too, has 48 hours to decide on the complaint.
After those deadlines expire, the DIP will announce final results of the referendum and forward them to the parliament which called the vote.
However, the expiry of deadlines will also depend on whether and when new objections to possible irregularities and possible complaints to the DIP's decisions to the Constitutional Court will be submitted, which could prolong deadlines for the announcement of the final referendum result.
