Amnesty International has welcomed the fact that the Split Pride 2012 parade ended peacefully and safely, adding that the Croatian police have provided an adequate protection for the participants in the parade and thus supported the right to freedom of expression and public assembly of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) persons.

Amnesty International, whose team of domestic and foreign observers monitored the Split Pride parade, said they had excellent cooperation with Split police.

The second the Split Pride parade was held in the coastal city on Saturday and no incidents were reported.

According to police estimates, about 450 participated in the parade, including ministers Vesna Pusic, Ranko Ostojic, Predrag Matic, Arsen Bauk and Ivan Vrdoljak, as well as many public figures.

Given that the first parade, held in 2011, was marred by violence, 900 police provided security and a helicopter cruised above the seaport while the parade was under way.
