On the last day of 2010, there were 110,000 registered unemployed persons in Slovenia, which was six per cent more than in November and 13.8 per cent more than at the end of 2009, the Slovenian Employment Service said on Thursday.

The unemployment rate is expected to increase further in 2011, mainly because of the continuing crisis in the construction sector where bankruptcy proceedings can be expected.

Also, the temporary subsidies which the government introduced at the start of the economic crisis to preserve jobs are no longer in force.

The government recently granted 8.4 million euros to the Employment Service for vocational guidance and training for job seekers registered with employment offices. The funds, 85 per cent of which come from the European Social Fund and the rest from the state budget, were granted for the 2011-2015 period.
