The police in the coastal city of Zadar on Friday arrested Luka Skara, head of Skabrnja municipality in the Zadar hinterland, for making threats to a Roma family during an incident in Skabrnja on Thursday when local residents protested against Roma families taking up residence in their neighbourhood.

Zadar County Police Department spokesman Elis Zodan said the threats and insults at the protest rally in Skabrnja constituted disturbance of public order, adding that after a police interview, Skara was taken to the local magistrates' court.

One more resident of Skabrnja was reported to the police over yesterday's protest.

The Djanijas, the Roma family against whose settlement in Skabrnja local residents protested, have left the place, fearing for their safety.

Skara said that he was reported to the police by Ante Djanija, who obtained a restraining order against him. He added that he did not even come close or talk to Djanija during the protest and that he was trying to calm the protesting residents.
