About 2,000 activists of the non-governmental organisations "Zelena akcija" (Green Action) and "Pravo na grad" (Right to a City) and members of the public on Monday continued to protest against the construction of an entrance ramp to an underground car park in Varsavska Street in central Zagreb, demanding that the City Assembly initiate the procedure for a referendum on the impeachment of Mayor Milan Bandic.
Green Action leader Tomislav Tomasevic said that "a politician who ignores 55,000 signatures against the construction project in Varsavska and the opinions of experts and public figures deserves to be the first politician to be removed from power by citizens."
Protest organisers laid out a banner, about eight metres long and 1.5 metres wide, on the street saying, "Referendum on Bandic Now!" and invited members of the public to sign it, which those present did. An hour afterwards protesters headed to the City Assembly to hand over the banner.
Mayor Bandic did not address the protesters. He briefly told reporters earlier that "everyone should do their job and this country will be better off."
The City Assembly will hold a special meeting on Tuesday to discuss the case.
