Croatian President Ivo Josipovic said after the first session of his Social Justice Council on Wednesday, that the starting point for the analysis of the government's Economic Recovery Programme would be to equally and justly distribute the burden of the crisis.

These measures are not only economic, but they also have serious social consequences which is why they must be thoroughly analysed, Josipovic said.

Complex reforms must be carried our and in principle they are economically justified, Josipovic said. They, however, can have both positive and negative social consequences. This is why they need to be analysed not only from the economic but also from the social aspect, the president stressed.

Saying that he expected the government to be opened, Josipovic stressed that economic measures were not in the remit of the head of state, but that he felt general responsibility for Croatia's political and social development and that he would, in cooperation with the government, use this to implement measures in a way that would be not only economically efficient but also justly applied to all citizens.

The president's social justice council is comprised of professors, journalists, theologians, unionists, artists, activists and other prominent people.
