Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) parliamentarian Davor Ivo Stier on Friday criticised Prime Minister Zoran Milanovic for making false accusations against the HDZ when claiming that the HDZ was conspiring against Croatia's entry into the European Union.

Stier told the national parliament (Sabor) that Milanovic was fabricating the accusations against the HDZ, and he drew a parallel between the HDZ position and the position of French officer Alfred Dreyfus whose trial and conviction in 1894 on charges of treason became one of the most tense political dramas in French and European history. Known today as the Dreyfus Affair, the incident eventually ended with Dreyfus's complete exoneration.

Stier made this statement in Sabor in response to Milanovic's claims that the Opposition was defaming his cabinet abroad and in response to a daily newspaper's reports that the government was confident that the latest doubts by some German politicians about Croatia's preparedness for EU membership were stirred by efforts of HDZ officials, including Stier, to vilify the incumbent government aboard.

"This is a stark lie," Stier said adding that Milanovic was accusing the HDZ so as to cover up his cabinet's incapability and inactivity.

"I accuse Mr. Milanovic of failing to do his job properly and of seeking an alibi in a sick conspiracy theory. I accuse Mr. Milanovic of fabricating internal and external enemies, following the old Communist recipe, instead of doing his job and of reading the European Commission's report and carrying out all the tasks so that Croatia may enter the EU on 1 July 2013," said the HDZ MP.

Stier said that only the responsible work of the incumbent government was the way to ensure Croatia's entry into the EU, as planned.

Milanovic's paranoia needs to be stopped, Stier said adding that this paranoia might be caused by the awareness of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) and Milanovic that the HDZ had been able to unblock Croatia's EU accession negotiations in more difficult circumstances and finalise the membership talks.

Instead of being afraid of the HDZ know-how and experience and its connections in Europe and the world, Milanovic should create conditions for a normal communication and cooperation between his cabinet and the Opposition so that we all can work for the benefit of Croatia, the HDZ parliamentarian said.

Croatia has deserved its place in Europe, however, the HDZ does not want to see negative surprises next spring, but insists that this government must now start doing its work seriously, he added.

Stier insists that PM Milanovic is a bad premier, explaining that there is nothing personal about it, thus alluding to previous accusations from Milanovic who described Stier as a man in whom nothing good existed.
