Social Democratic Party (SDP) MP Mirela Holy left the party on Friday, advising party colleagues of her decision via e-mail.

"We have received her e-mail," Minister of Environment and Nature Protection Mihael Zmajlovic said in parliament after he had rejected an amendment Holy had submitted for the founding of a National Parks Agency.

He described Holy's claims that the SDP had let down the ruling coalition's pre-election Agenda 21 platform as manipulation and reiterated that it would be insane to set up yet another agency, given the "forest of agencies" for which no one knew what they actually did.

Parliament today adopted a new nature protection law, which sets the groundwork to proclaim the Natura 2000 network, clearly defines deadlines and shortens procedures to assess projects aimed at preserving the ecological network.

Natura 2000 is designed to protect endangered habitats and species across Europe.
