Milijan Brkic is the new secretary-general of the Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) and Damir Sesvecan is his deputy, the main committee of the strongest opposition party decided on Friday at the first session chaired by the party's new president, Tomislav Karamarko.

Karamarko was formally confirmed as chairman of the main committee, while Damir Krsticevic was appointed his deputy.

Karamarko said the inauguration of the party's bodies, after Sunday's intra-party elections, was completed.

He refuted claims that he now had complete control over the party.

"We simply inaugurated the vital parts of the party necessary for normal functioning. That doesn't mean getting control. I'm only the party's president, not an emperor," he said.
