Mayor Zeljko Sabo said on Tuesday that the local authorities had taken all preparatory measures to protect Vukovar against possible flood damage due to record high levels of the Danube.

"We expect a dramatic swelling of the Danube. However, all necessary preparations are being made, as planned, to save our city," the mayor said after a meeting of the task force in charge of implementing protective measures.

He said that Vukovar was braced for the worst-case scenario with dikes being raised.

Flood Alert is in place with the Danube rising to 613 centimetres at 1100 hours Tuesday, and Flood Warning will be issued when the Danube exceeds 630 centimetres.

In 1965, Vukovar registered a record high level of the Danube at 769 centimetres.
