Tomislav Karamarko on Friday announced his candidacy for president of the Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ), stressing that he wanted to give Croatia back its self-respect and fight for "Croatia's new independence", primarily on the economic front, calling for unity among HDZ members.

"Unless we are economically independent, our political independence will only be a constitutional category," Karamarko said.

He said that elections for party president had caused the unnecessary unrest among HDZ members, stressing that that the candidate who knows how to appreciate every individual and the HDZ in the past 22 years would win the party election.

He called on the HDZ youth and all party members to clearly voice their opinion and state what kind of a party they want the HDZ to be in the future.

Asked why he is running for party president, Karamarko said he wanted to help the HDZ, notably because of his true patriotism and love for the country.

He presented his nine-item programme.
