Josipovic, Milanovic sign book of condolence

A book of condolence was opened in the Croatian Parliament at 9am on Monday over the death of Parliament Speaker Boris Sprem, who passed away a day before.

Croatian President Ivo Josipovic was the first to sign the book in the Sabor and on that occasion he wrote that Boris Sprem was "an exceptional politician and statesman, a good man and a sincere friend".

Shortly after President Josipovic also signed the book Prime Minister Zoran Milanovic did so too.

Boris Sprem, 56, who suffered from multiple myeloma, died at the MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, United States, early Sunday morning, Central European Time.

Sprem's body is expected to arrive in Croatia on Wednesday and a commemoration will be held in parliament at 5pm.

Sprem's body will lie in state at Zagreb's Mirogoj cemetery on Thursday morning. He will be buried at noon. Thursday is expected to be declared a day of mourning, the parliament reported on Sunday.
