The chief representative of the Croatian Association of Trade Unions (HUS) for Dalmatia, Jozo Maric, said on Wednesday that there were several new potential buyers interested in the Split-based drinks producer Dalmacijavino.

"The HUS has information about several new candidates being interested in buying Dalmacijavino," Maric told the media in the evening, but would not give their names.

"We are not surprised by (US businessman Salamon) Berkowitz's decision to back out because we have realised before that he is not a serious buyer and that he is unnecessarily delaying the takeover of Dalmacijavino," Maric said.

The trade union representative in Dalmacijavino, Lukica Bucat, said he was not pleased that Berkowitz's offer had been turned down. "We had hoped that the bank guarantees would satisfy the seller and that Dalmacijavino would be sold well."

Bucat said that workers were ready to negotiate with the government as a majority owner to see if there was a model of bankruptcy that could keep Dalmacijavino afloat.
