Retired Croatian Army General Damir Krsticevic, who won a seat in the new Sabor at the 4 December parliamentary elections as a candidate of the Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ), has said that he will not assume his parliamentary seat but that he will remain a member of the HDZ.
"I decided to freeze my parliamentary mandate in the Sabor and I informed those attending this evening's meeting of the leadership of the HDZ branch in the Split-Dalmatia county about my decision," Krsticevic told reporters on Tuesday evening adding that the HDZ Secretary-General Branko Bacic had been present at the meeting.
The retired general said that he had been engaged in the run-up to the election as an HDZ candidate to help the party after it had found itself in a difficult situation.
"I helped as much as I could and I am now returning to my job in a company where I worked before the election campaign," Krsticevic said.
He was the second candidate at the joint list of the HDZ and the Croatian Civic Party (HGS) of Split Mayor Zeljko Kerum in the tenth constituency. This list secured five seats in the parliament.
Krsticevic said that he had informed HDZ leader Jadranka Kosor about his decision a few days before.
