Entrepreneurship and Crafts Minister Gordan Maras said on Monday that only companies that were not strategically important should be privatised and when it was possible for someone to invest in a certain industry together with the state, in order to open markets and create jobs.

He was responding to questions from the press about the privatisation of the artificial fertiliser manufacturer Petrokemija.

We must open ourselves to capital, to new markets, he said, adding that there was no need for the state to manage all the companies in its portfolio.

Privatisation should get started. We are all aware that it lagged over the past four to five years, said Maras.

"Privatisation doesn't necessarily mean only sales revenues. It means joint investments, it means creating jobs and opening markets. In that sense, any such privatisation has my support."
