Anti-EU activists arrested for taking down EU flag

Police have arrested five participants in and the organiser of the anti-EU admission protest in Zagreb's central Ban Jelacic Square, after they attempted to take down the European Union flag. The protesters said that hoisting the EU flag was contrary to the Croatian Constitution and legislation.

Spokeswoman for the Interior Ministry Jelena Bikic confirmed to press that five persons had been arrested after attempting to remove the EU flag, adding that the arrested men were being "processed".

The protest rally was organised by the "Movement for Croatia - No to the EU" whose activists claim that by entering the bloc Croatia would lose its sovereignty and independence gained it the Homeland War and that the country would be submitted to the interest of large capital and political elites.

The movement accused the former and the incumbent government of betraying national interests.

According to some estimates, the rally way attended by several hundred protesters.
