The Academic Solidarity trade union on Wednesday announced that its members would go on strike on 6 July at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, the University of Zagreb, in protest against the government-sponsored bills on tertiary education.

Academic Solidarity representatives told a news conference in Zagreb today that their action was supported by students and Zagreb University Rector Aleksa Bjelis. They said that they also expected President Ivo Josipovic to back them.

The trade union said that the disputable bills were not based ony any national strategy for the development of science and high education and that they would usher in the commercialisation of the educational system resulting in the restriction of the autonomy of universities and the freedom of scientific creation.
