The 61st Dubrovnik Summer Festival opened on Saturday evening with a ceremony outside the city's St Blaise's Church.

The festival was traditionally declared open by the Mayor, Andro Vlahusic, and among those attending were Croatian President Ivo Josipovic and his Slovenian counterpart Danilo Tuerk.

The event, which lasts until August 25, will bring together over 2,000 artists from Croatia and abroad who will give about 70 theatrical, musical, dance, opera and other artistic performances.
