The 60th Pula Film Festival opened on Saturday evening with a traditional display of fireworks and the screening of the Dalibor Matanic comedy Majstori (Handymen).

Croatia's longest-lived and best attended film festival will show a record 24 feature films in the national programme, of which 14 will be screened in the main selection and 10 as co-productions with minority Croatian participation.

The festival was opened by President Ivo Josipovic, who said: "There is no better cinema than the Arena in Pula. I think that the digitisation of cinemas means a return to the cinema. So let's go back to the cinema because it promotes nobility of mind and goodness."

Among those attending the opening ceremony was Culture Minister Andrea Zlatar Violic.
