The World Wildlife Fund (WWF) has said in its latest Living Planet Report that humanity's demands exceed some 50 percent of the Earth's capacity to sustain people and that Croatia is one of the countries living beyond its natural means.

The new analysis in the Living Planet Report shows that "globally, our demand on natural resources has doubled since 1966 and people are using the equivalent of 1.5 planets to support our lifestyles. If we continue living beyond the Earth's limits, by 2030 we will need the equivalent of two planets to meet our annual demands."

According to the WWF, "Croatia consumes more natural resources than are available."

"For example, if everyone on Earth led the same lifestyle as a Croatian, we would need more than 2 planets – that is to say we would need the equivalent of our Earth plus Venus and the Moon. Continuing the current consumption trends would lead us to the point of no return,” Stella Satalic of WWF Mediterranean in Croatia was quoted as saying last Wednesday.

"Outstanding natural heritage is a competitive advantage of Croatia in Europe, attracting more than 11 millions visitors every year. WWF is urging government to minimize threats to Protected Areas and to integrate them into development plans so that they can benefit nature, people and development," reads the report.

The WWF 2010 Living Planet Report was produced by WWF in collaboration with the Zoological Society of London and the Global Footprint Network.

The WWF is an international conservation organization and works in 100 countries.
