Some 200 employees of the state-run "Hrvatske autoceste" motorway operator, who are members of a trade union of road maintenance workers, on Thursday staged a rally outside the governments headquarters to protest against the Zoran Milanovic cabinet's plan to monetise a part the state debt through highways' lease.

The protesters were carrying banners with messages "Reschedule Loans and Keep Managing Motorways!" and traffic signs for forbidden direction.

"It is incorrect to claim that motorways are unprofitable. We annually earn HRK 2.6 billion," a protestor told the press.

He said that therefore it was necessary to have a professional rather than politically appointed management that could make it sure that the "Hrvatske autoceste" would wrap up annual financial outcome in the black as of 2019 with the rescheduled loans.

The trade union stick to its plans to launch an initiative for a referendum on the matter if the governments does not abandon its plans for monatisation through the lease.
