Croatian People's Party (HNS) official Vesna Pusic has said that she deems it to be the obligation of everybody in Croatia to comply with the Constitutional Law on cooperation with the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY).

Asked by reporters about the accountability of former Croatian President Stjepan Mesic for having provided the Hague tribunal with transcripts, the HNS parliamentarian said in Jasenovac on Sunday that everybody, including Mesic, was obliged to abide by the Constitutional Law on cooperation with the ICTY.

I find it to be detrimental to the interest of the people (Croatian generals) waiting for a final ruling and to Croatia's interests when this case is being used now for petty political purposes. That can have only negative consequences, Pusic said.

We in the country and those who have received non-final rulings should now stick to the law and evidence and insist on rational arguments, she said.

Asked by reporters whether the verdicts could affect the coming parliamentary elections, the HNS official said she did not believe that it would impact the polls.

A referendum on Croatia's entry into the EU is still far away, and the Hague tribunal is not a court of the European Union but of the United Nations, she said in response to questions about possible effects on that referendum.
