The parliamentary Committee on the Constitution, Standing Orders and Political System will discuss on Friday whether parliament will elect one Constitutional Court judge in accordance with the recently amended constitution or the old one.
Last week, the committee shortlisted by secret ballot two of the five candidates for the post, Nevenka Sernhorst and Antonija Kovacic, a High Magistrate Court judge.
During today's discussion about them, and given that Sernhorst's term as a Constitutional Court judge is about to expire, the opposition Social Democrats said the new constitution had been adopted and that its provision, that a two-thirds parliamentary majority is required to elect a Constitutional Court judge, should be applied.
Committee chair Vladimir Seks of the ruling Croatian Democratic Union said the committee would decide on Friday whether to elect one of the candidates according to the old or the new constitution. He added the constitutional law on the Constitutional Court had to be amended as well.
Speaker Luka Bebic told MPs today that parliament would likely sit until July 15 and not exceed the constitutional deadline to wrap up before the summer recess. He said MPs would likely sit every working day to discuss the 70 items on the agenda.
