The charge d'affaires at the Croatian Embassy to Libya, Vojko Senker, said on Sunday evening that workers of the Croatian construction company Montmontaza in Benghazi would be evacuated from the city within the next two days.

Since the security situation in Benghazi keeps deteriorating, 11 Montmontaza workers and 10 of their colleagues from other countries requested assistance on Sunday for evacuation from Libya, Senker told the public broadcaster Croatian Television (HTV) by telephone.

He said that they would most probably be flown out of the country by a small Croatian airline within the next two days at most.

Senker said that 380 Croatian nationals were currently working in Croatian companies in Libya, but added that the Embassy had not received any requests for evacuation from Croatian workers with other Croatian companies or those employed in foreign companies.

Senker said that Croatian Embassy officials were in close contact with Croatian companies employing most of the Croatian workers in Libya, namely Crosco, Geofizika and Viadukt.

Anti-government protests have been going on in Libya for four days now, inspired by popular revolts in neighbouring Tunisia and Egypt. Libyan security forces have responded with the use of force, killing over 170 people, according to the international rights organisation Human Rights Watch. The clashes have been the fiercest in Benghazi, the country's second largest city.
