Medvednica to mark European Bat Night on 27 Aug.

The nature park of Medvednica overlooking Zagreb will mark the European Bat Night on 27 August, the head of the public institution Nature Park Medvednica, Nives Farkas-Topolnik said on Thursday.

She called on all bat friends to join in the 15th edition of the European Bat Night. The programme begins at 1100 hrs and ends at 1900 hrs in the park on 27 August. The event, organised by EUROBATS, takes place every year in more than 30 countries on 27-28 August 2011.

Croatia, which joined the Agreement on the Conservation of Populations of European Bats in 2000, boasts of 35 species of bats, out of a total of 52 species of this flying mammal in Europe and the Mediterranean.

There are more than 1150 species of bats worldwide, and 177 of them are endangered and five declared extinct.
