In the holding of the upcoming referendum on Croatia's accession to the European Union, campaigning for the referendum question, either positive or negative, is not restricted, but it is prohibited outside or in the immediate vicinity of polling stations, the State Election Commission said on Monday, recalling that the law on referenda does not envisage a media blackout.

On the day before the upcoming referendum and on referendum day, January 21 and 22, persons supporting or objecting to Croatia's EU accession will not be banned from giving statements or interviews. However, outside or in the immediate vicinity of polling places, any campaigning is prohibited, including distribution of leaflets, putting up of posters, holding of rallies, and giving of speeches and statements.

Under the referenda law, the bodies in charge of its holding are the State Election Commission, county, city and municipal commissions, and voting committees. A person's membership of a political party is not an obstacle to their being appointed chair or member of the committees.
