The president of the strongest Opposition party - the Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) - Tomislav Karamarko, said on Tuesday evening that after local elections the party must enter serious preparations for parliamentary elections, saying that "Croatia will not survive unless the HDZ wins the next election."

"There will be only an entity of a socialistic character which got separated from Yugoslavia but without the values Croatia had in the 1990s," Karamarko told HDZ delegates at the convention of the HDZ Zagreb city organisation.

He said Croatia was vitally threatened, adding that the results of the latest census prove that. He said that "those who did not want Croatia are ruling the country today."

"This Croatia was created by Franjo Tudjman and not by Josip Broz Tito or Ivica Racan. Tudjman is the father of Croatia and this is why we are returning to Tudjmanism," he stressed.

Andrija Mikulcic and Ivan Kujundzic are running for president of the HDZ Zagreb city organisation.
