President Ivo Josipovic received representatives of the Council for Croatia - No to the EU, at their own request on Friday, the President's Office said in a statement.

The Council members thanked the President for receiving them and stressed the need to make it possible for members of the public to freely express their views about Croatia's intention to join the European Union in the period leading up to the referendum on this issue, scheduled for January 22.

Josipovic said he was confident that there was room in a public democratic debate for different views about EU membership, adding that people's knowledge of EU-related issues was part of the decision-making procedure in the referendum.

The Council members raised their objections to the ongoing campaign, the availability of relevant information, and presented their arguments against Croatia joining the EU.

Josipovic stressed that he was in favour of Croatia becoming a member of the EU and gave his reasons for it.
