Croatian President Ivo Josipovic on Thursday declined to comment on the apprehension of former Deputy Prime Minister Damir Polancec, explaining that it was a matter to be dealt with by the judiciary.

"I have no comment on it (Polancec's arrest). Everything should be done in accordance with the law. All those who are accountable should be brought to justice. It is up to judicial bodies to do it in line with the law," Josipovic said at a briefing he held on the occasion of the first anniversary of Croatia's entry into NATO.

Polancec was arrested on Tuesday and will remain in investigative custody for a month on suspicion of involvement in reported wrongdoings in the Koprivnica-based food company "Podravka".

Josipovic said that this issue would not be on the agenda of his meeting with Prime Minister Jadranka Kosor later in the day.

"I don't see any reason for us to discuss anybody's arrest at our meeting, it is a matter for the judiciary," Josipovic said, adding that the premier and he would consider Croatia's defence and foreign policy, as this was within their remit, according to the Constitution.
