Croatian President Ivo Josipovic on Wednesday started his three-day official visit to Germany by meeting German Parliament Speaker Norbert Lammert who expressed full support for Croatia's efforts to join the European Union.
"We discussed primarily Croatia's membership in the European Union and Germany's support for our efforts was reaffirmed," Josipovic told reporters after talks with Lammert, which he described as excellent.
The Bundestag Speaker acknowledged the reforms in Croatia and we particularly discussed the fight against corruption, Josipovic told Croatian reporters.
He said that Lammert was especially interested in Croatia's policies towards neighbouring countries.
"Support was voiced in that regard because there is an awareness that peace and stability in the region are important for Croatia, as well as for the entire EU," Josipovic said.
He added that he expected the rest of his visit to Germany to be as successful as his talks with the president of the Bundestag.
On Thursday Josipovic is expected to meet President Christian Wulff and Chancellor Angela Merkel.
The Croatian president also commented on security measures having been visibly stepped up after the Croatian Embassy in Berlin on Monday received a bomb package.
"I have to say that I feel safe and I believe that there will be no problems because Germany, like Croatia, is a safe country."
Josipovic will end his visit to Germany on Friday, when he will meet German business people and local officials in Mainz.
