The outgoing year has been tough and challenging, but 2011 will be even tougher for doing business, a Christmas reception given by the Croatian Employers' Association (HUP) heard on Tuesday.

HUP president Damir Kustrak said that 2010 was tough, but that 2011 would be even more complex, adding that entrepreneurs would have to win their competitive position on their own.

Kustrak said that next year public dialogue on economic issues should be raised to a higher level, which would help in seeking solutions.

The chairman of the HUP's Council of Members, Ivan Miloza, said that everything the HUP had warned about had become a reality in 2010 and Croatia found itself in a difficult economic situation. "Politicians would not listen to reason, so it's high time they cleaned up their ears."

Miloza said that in 2011 "the agony will continue with unforeseeable consequences unless something serious is done about it and it may end in a disaster."

The reception was attended by over 100 business people, journalists, and representatives of economic and state institutions and trade unions.
