The Croatian Social Liberal Party (HSLS) is against the announced government-sponsored tax reform and real estate taxes, saying that such an anti-people decision would lead to the final destruction of the middle class.

"Such radical tax decisions, should they be adopted, are aimed against the people and will lead to the final destruction of the middle class and Croatia will then be divided into two basic groups - workers with no land and a political oligarchy. We do not watch this 'Russian' movie in Croatia," the HSLS said in a statement on Monday.

The party said that the government's property tax proposal was in fact the real estate tax proposal, adding that a similar thing existed in these areas some 30 years ago.

The HSLS wants Croatian citizens to remain the owners of Croatian real estate once the country enters the European Union, saying that introducing even a low two-percent real estate tax would lead to the sale of property.
