Member of the regional HDSSB party Zoran Vinkovic appealed to all members of the Croatian Parliament during a session on Wednesday to help the workers of the bankrupt flour factory Djakovstina, whose representatives had arrived in Zagreb this morning to draw attention to their situation.

Vinkovic said that the government should solve the problem of 350 workers by paying the workers their unpaid wages and claiming the money owed through lawsuits.

He read a letter from the workers who asked the MPs, the government and the public to raise their voice in protecting "workers' and human rights that have been trampled".

"Manipulated, robbed, cheated and abandoned by the trade union and the Croatian government, and left to the mercies of the Commercial Court in Osijek, the official receiver and the board of creditors, we have ended up in the street and are now protesting against the 'grey democracy' to which we have been subjected for a year and a half. We are asking you, members of Parliament, to correct this injustice that has been done to us," the letter says.

Ivan Suker of the ruling HDZ accused the HDSSB of demagoguery, saying that they were using the plight of the Djakovstina workers "to score political points." He referred the HDSSB deputies to the Bankruptcy Act that defines the terms of payments from the bankruptcy estate.

About 30 of former Djakovstina workers gathered outside the seat of the EU Delegation in Zagreb on Wednesday morning, demanding of the government to pay 26 million kuna in severance packages for the 350 workers of the bankrupt factory. They have been protesting since last Tuesday, blaming the government as a 32% owner of Djakovstina.

The workers are expected to be received by President Ivo Josipovic.
