The Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Regional Development and EU Funds, Branko Grcic, said on Thursday that economic indicators showed that the economic situation was improving and added that budget expenditure was under control.

"What happens until the end of the year is what will define this whole year. We will see whether there will be a turnaround that we all expect," Grcic told the press before a Cabinet meeting.

Grcic said that the autumn would be difficult in terms of maintaining the budget.

"We have said clearly that we will keep the expenditure side of the budget under control, while the revenue side depends on the growth rate -- whether we will stop the GDP decline and ensure that the planned revenues are achieved," Grcic said.

The Minister of Maritime Affairs, Transport and Infrastructure, Sinisa Hajdas Doncic, said that his department had made great progress, citing the restructuring of the rail operator HZ, the postal service and the motorway operator HAC.

"More has been done over the last year than in the last 20 years," Hajdas Doncic said, expressing hope that the first round of selection of a concessionaire for HAC would be completed by the year's end. He said that that would reduce debt and create a positive economic climate.
