The government on Thursday adopted amendments to the Artificial Insemination Act under which it would be allowed to fertilise more than three egg cells within one treatment cycle.

Health Minister Darko Milinovic said that the government had thus met the request from the medical profession, the Croatian Society for Human Reproduction, and the centres for in vitro fertilisation to allow fertilisation of more than three egg cells for women with few egg cells, severely infertile men, and oncological patients.

Milinovic said that the Artificial Insemination Act, passed in 2009, was being well implemented, as illustrated by the fact that 1,019 children had been born in the last year and half, or 220 more than when the previous law was in force.
