Public sector unions on Tuesday initialled an agreement with the government specifying the modus operandi by which salaries in the public sector would be raised when Croatia achieves economic growth and the state budget can sustain such an increase, after which the strike announced by unions for Wednesday June 5 was called off.

President of the independent union of secondary school employees Branimir Mihalinec told reporters that all unions had been advised to call off the strike as an agreement had been initialled following talks in the Labour Ministry.

The government has promised that it will not reduce salaries or allowances for seniority. It was specified that once Gross Domestic Product (GDP) was positive for three consecutive quarters, unions would sit down with the government and discuss wage increases along with the condition that budget deficit does not exceed 3%, Mihalinec said.

Minister of Labour and Pension System Mirando Mrsic said that he was pleased an agreement had been reached with the unions on how to raise public sector salaries.
