Foreign Minister Vesna Pusic has said that "Croatia should, must and can implement its laws and standards of human and civil rights which it wants to promote", in her comment on the latest developments in Vukovar, sparked by attempts of the authorities to put up signs both in Cyrillic and Latin on public institutions in that eastern Croatian town.
"Calm and level-haded moves are now necessary. The future of Vukovar as a Croatian and European city lies in its tradition, multiethnicity," Pusic said in Bled on Tuesday, adding that Vukovar now needs its legacy and its step towards the future.
"The journey towards a civil state and towards the future goes through equal rights and all that we request to be recognised for us, is recognised for any ethnic group anywhere in the world, including all citizens of Croatia," Pusic said.
Asked about the proposal by the opposition Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) for a five-year moratorium on placing dual-alphabet signs in Vukovar, Pusic replied that "the HDZ had enough time to think about it when the HDZ majority adopted the law (on dual-script signs), and probably had some good reasons for that."
