Serbian Interior Minister Ivica Dacic said on Thursday that possible new Croatian indictments for war crimes would not contribute to reconciliation and cooperation between the two countries.

The Croatian Chief State Prosecutor's Office said in a statement on its website on Thursday that an investigation before the Osijek County Court in the case against the perpetrators of war crimes committed in detention camps in Serbia was ongoing and that the public would be notified after the investigation was completed.

"I don't know where this leads to, to the opening of new reciprocal cases and not reconciliation," Dacic told reporters when asked to comment on the announcement of new war crimes lawsuits coming from Croatia.

According to the Belgrade-based news agency Beta, Dacic was speaking at an anti-discrimination conference in Belgrade, organised by the UNDP. He said that efforts must be made towards reconciliation and regional cooperation.

Dacic reiterated that he advocated the punishment of those responsible for war crimes in the former Yugoslavia.

According to another Serbian news agency Tanjug, Dacic said he advocated the processing of all war crimes and putting an end to what happened in the past.

Dacic said he had nothing against the processing of those who committed war crimes "but if we want to put an end to what happened in the past and move towards regional reconciliation, I don't know where all of this leads to".

He told reporters that all these cases should be closed as the time went by and new cases should not be opened, adding that this was contrary to what had been said at meetings between the two countries' top officials.
