Croatia's exports totalled HRK 4.3 billion in February, down 20.8 per cent from the same month of 2009, while imports declined by 15 per cent to HRK 7.7 billion, according to figures released by the Central Bureau of Statistics this past week.

The trade deficit was HRK 3.4 billion, 6.6 per cent lower than in February 2009, and the import/export ratio was 55.3 per cent.

Since January saw a rise in exports and a decline in imports, the cumulative figures for the first two months showed a greater fall in imports than in exports, a lower deficit and an import/export ratio of 59.4 per cent.

In the first two months of this year Croatian companies exported HRK 8.7 billion worth of commodities, or 5 per cent less than in the first two months of 2009, while at the same time they imported commodities worth HRK 14.7 billion, a decline of 12.1 per cent. The trade deficit was thus reduced by 20.8 per cent to slightly below HRK 6 billion.

When viewed in euros, in the first two months exports amounted to EUR 1.2 billion and imports to slightly over EUR 2 billion, with the trade deficit standing at EUR 818.7 million.

Compared to the first two months of 2009, exports went down by 3.6 per cent and imports by 10.8 per cent, while the deficit was reduced by 19.6 per cent.
