About 40 demonstrators were arrested in the second largest Slovenian city of Maribor on Monday evening in a rioting that followed a protest rally against the mayor, police official Bartol Lampert told Slovenian Television.

He said that about 8,000 people were involved in the demonstration and that considerable property damage was done.

No major incidents were reported at other protest rallies against "corrupt political and economic elites" across the country, including those in Ljubljana in Celje. Media said that the only city other than Maribor where arrests were made was Celje.
