Croatia's most prominent female poet of the second half of the 20th century, Vesna Parun, died on Monday in Stubicke Toplice at the age of 88.

Parun was born on the island of Zlarin in 1922.

Her collection of poems "Dawns and Whirlwinds", published in 1947, marked a turning point in Croatian poetry after World War II. Eleven of her collections of poems were published in foreign languages.

Parun also wrote prose, poems for children and plays. She received a number of awards for her work.
