Slovenian President Danilo Tuerk on Friday scheduled the inaugural session of the new 90-seat national parliament for next Wednesday, after he was provided by the state election commission with the final results of the early parliamentary elections held on 4 December.

"The inaugural session marks the beginning of the work of the new parliament. I believe that parliamentary deputies will understand the challenges of the present day and adopt decisions in the interest of the Slovenian state and people," Tuerk said.

At the elections with a turnout of 64 percent, seven parties won seats.

Positive Slovenia, a party led by Ljubljana Mayor Zoran Jankovic, won 28.51 percent of votes and thus 28 seats, which is why Jankovic is the likeliest prime minister-designate.

The Slovenian Democratic Party (SDS) of Janez Jansa is second with 26 seats.

They are followed by the Social Democrats (SD) of the outgoing Prime Minister Borut Pahor with 10 seat. The Civic List of Gregor Virant secured eight seats, the Democratic Party of Pensioners (DESUS) and the Slovenian Popular Party (SLS) each will have six deputies and the New Slovenia party (NSI) four.

Roberto Batteli and Laszlo Goencz will also be in the new parliament as representatives of the Italian and the Hungarian minority respectively.

Talks between Jankovic and possible partners in the future governing coalition are under way.

On Thursday Tuerk expressed hope that the parliament could appoint the new prime minister by the end of this year.
