The Serbian parliament on Friday adopted changes to the law on criminal proceedings that were submitted to parliament to be discussed under urgent procedure following riots caused by hooligans in Belgrade during a recent Gay Pride parade and at a soccer match between Italy and Serbia in Genoa.

The legislative changes envisage extending the maximum period during which a person may be kept in custody in criminal proceedings from eight to 30 days for criminal acts with elements of violence, as well as custody for criminal acts which carry a sentence of five years in prison and more.

Initially, custody was envisaged for criminal acts carrying a sentence of more than 10 years in prison.

Explaining the changes, Justice Minister Snezana Malovic underlined their importance for continuing an efficient fight against rioting at public meetings and sport events.

She said the problem of Serbian rioters was beginning to spill over the border and damage the country's reputation.
