The protest of 45 farmers' associations from eight counties announced for Tuesday will not be held because of new developments following Monday's meeting in Slavonski Brod, namely there are indications that other wheat buyers are prepared to accept the Agrokor purchase model, the chairman of the coordinating body of farmers' associations from Slavonia and Baranja, Dragutin Dukic, told reporters on Tuesday.
The president of the Djakovo-based association Brazda , Mato Brlosic, said that Brazda representatives from Osijek-Baranja county would hold protests at three locations at noon, as a warning.
After the failed talks with wheat buyers and representatives of Agriculture Ministry on Monday, 45 farmers' associations from eight counties had previously announced they would organise a major protest and block 20 roads in eight counties at 1100 hours Tuesday. Farmers' main demand is that the minimum purchase price of wheat should be 1.60 kuna per kilogram and that harvest subsidies should be paid no later than September 15.
Explaining the reasons why they gave up on the protest, Dukic said that yesterday's proposal by Agrokor, which he said was exceptionally correct, was accepted today by Granolio, adding that Podravka announced it would do the same.
This refers to the price of 1.35 kuna per kilogramme of wheat as a down payment and an agreement that farmers would not be charged for storage fee, which means that they can wait for a better purchase price.
