The peak of the Danube flood-wave came to Batina, east Croatia, on Thursday afternoon, when the level of the water reached 7.70 metres, which was the second highest record since the river water measurement was introduced at that spot.

The peak is lower by some 10 centimetres than expected, the head of the flood emergency staff, Zoran Djurokovic told the press.

He repeated that east Croatia was braced for flooding and that disaster warnings would be in place in the next few days.

The record high level of the Danube at Batina was 7.95 metres in 1965.

The level of the Drava, a tributary to the Danube, was 4.95 metres on Thursday afternoon in the biggest eastern Croatian city of Osijek.

Croatia's section of the Danube is some 140 kilometres long.
