Representatives of the Opposition in the new Croatian parliament on Thursday agreed in general about who of them would fill in offices allocated in the parliament for the parliamentary minority and under the agreement, the two deputy speakers coming from the Opposition would be Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) deputies.

After their talks in the Sabor, representatives of opposition parties expressed satisfaction with the agreement, and stressed that the agreement was not final as they would continue negotiating on the matter after being informed by the parliamentary majority how many working bodies would be in the seventh Croatian parliament.

HDZ Secretary-General Branko Bacic said that under this agreement, the places of the two deputy speakers, designated for the parliamentary minority, would be given to his party.

The HDZ will also have its representatives chairing a majority of parliamentary committees that are to be chaired by the Opposition.

The sixth parliament had 30 committees and delegations and Opposition MPs chaired 13 parliamentary committees.

Asked whether the HDZ president, Jadranka Kosor, would be a Sabor Deputy Speaker, Bacic said that the HDZ presidency would decide on the matter and that the decision could not be expected by the end of this week.

Dinko Buric of the Croatian Democratic Party of Slavonia and Baranja (HDSSB), who will be at the helm of the HDSSB club of deputies, said that what had been agreed today was only in general and that a final agreement could be expected after their meeting with the new majority in the parliament.

Dragutin Lesar, the head of the Croatian Labour Party club of deputies, said that a final agreement could be reached only after the ruling majority decided whether it would change the Sabor rule book.

Apart from the HDSSB and the Labour party, in attendance at today's talks in the parliament were representatives of the Croatian Peasant Party (HSS), the Croatian Party of Rights Dr. Ante Starcevic and of the Democratic Centre (DC).

Representatives of the independent list of Ivan Grubisic, which won two seats, and of the Croatian Civil Party (HGS), which ran in the elections in coalition with the HDZ, did not show up at the meeting.
