The mayor of the Bosnian coastal town of Neum, Zivko Matusko, says that the people of Neum are not opposed to the construction of the Peljesac bridge, by means of which Croatia aims to connect its southernmost part, which is cut off at Neum, with the rest of the country.

"Bridges are always welcome, they connect two sides. I suggest that teams of experts from the two countries sit at a negotiating table and reach an agreement rather than trade with territory," Matusko told klix.ba, Bosnia and Herzegovina's most influential Internet portal.

He said that the issue was being unnecessarily politicised.

However, Matusko opposed the construction of a corridor through the town. "Neum is not in favour of building a corridor. It would split Neum municipality in half and that's out of the question."

The mayor also rejected a possibility of building a cargo port in Neum, saying that the town's strategy was to develop tourism. He said that a maritime port could only be in the Croatian town of Ploce.
