Former Croatian president Stjepan Mesic told Croatian Television on Sunday there was no political process against ex-prime minister Ivo Sanader, adding that "the country today functions as a law-based state".

Commenting on statements by Zarko Puhovski that Sanader fled Croatia to hide secret documents which incriminate Mesic and Prime Minister Jadranka Kosor, the former president said that "the right to stupidity is a democratic right and Zarko Puhovski is exercising that democratic right".

Neither Ivo Sanader nor Zarko Puhovski knows anything that could discredit me, Mesic said.

Recalling his cooperation with the then prime minister, Mesic said he and Sanader had good cooperation when it came to the functions of institutions and the rule of law or meeting standards and criteria for entering the European Union.

Asked about the possibility of him running for Zagreb mayor, Mesic said he had an obligation towards his status and that he could not run for this position, as it was incompatible with his status.
